Listen, Hear, and Heal
I just finished a wonderful Communion TeleService with Paul Funfsinn of Celebrating Life. There is a different quality to the words of someone who has been touched by God and speaks with the surety that God is moving in his life and all our lives. I often feel disappointed when I hear people pray or talk about God and religion; so many preachers and teachers only seem to be going through the motions with out a true and fierce connection to the Divine. It's terrible. You can hear the doubt and sadness in their voices as they mouth words with no passion and try to feel that the words and structure of faith are enough for them - they try to convince themselves they don't need anything more. It's terrible.
Paul speaks with such confidence and honest conviction. He is blessed my the Holy Spirit and knows that we all can and do share in that blessing. It was a wonderful way to spend an hour ~ feeling heat and power of the living God moving through my body and my life.

On the drive home from Rochester Sunday night I listened to Carolyn Myss's "Navigating Hope ," It's good. Very good and exactly what I needed, not just that night, after a very disappointing weekend, but right now. It has been a confusing year and as I navigate my path forward, my spiritual evolution and my career I search for clarity. Carolyn is always very clear and her message in this lecture is both hopeful and practical.
I love listening to Carolyn. She has this wonderful, no nonsense approach to spirituality and health. It's not about hopin and wishin your way along your spiritual journey ~ it is about doing the work, every day to become the spiritual being you are meant to be. And I love that she doesn't mess about with coded language or made-up terms for her work. I think that a lot of "spiritual' teachers and leaders are intentionally confusing and obtuse to make themselves seem smarter than the audience. They throw to many ideas and foreign concepts, obtuse words and phrases for anyone to follow along leaving the audience saying, "Wow, there was so much information there! I didn't even get half of it. He's so smart!" When in reality he may just be a bad communicator. The goal is not to impress the listener with how smart you are, it's to make them realise how smart they are. The goal is to teach and communicate so that people learn and are helped along their paths.
Carolyn is smart, and clever and funny, but I never feel like she is trying to prove to me how smart she is, I never feel confused and I learn stuff. She's a great teacher ~ the kind I aspire to be.
In Navigating Hope she talks about forgiveness - not as something we do for those who have wronged us, but for ourselves. She gives tools to release anger and sorrow and encourages us to find the best in ourselves and to forgive the worst. Her words on forgiveness, spiritual direction and the mystical evolution of our country are so apt right now and helped my get some perspective on recent events and what I need to do going forward in my life.
I started to drift a bit on the second disc as she talked about collaboration and forming crews of people to work together, and then she did a short riff on offering help that almost made me crash the car. It was the exact situation I found myself in a few weeks ago - it was like she was speaking to me and I felt my anger dissolve. Perfect.
I cannot recommend "Navigating Hope" highly enough and it is on sale right now at Amazon and iTunes - buy both discs in mp3 format for $.99 each! |
